New York's Cardinal Dolan says George's death was a jolt

New York's Cardinal Timothy Dolan is joining others in remembering Cardinal Francis George as a gift from God and "friend and guide."

George, who retired as Chicago archbishop in the fall of 2014, died Friday after a long fight with cancer.

Dolan said while all realized the end for George was near, his passing "still comes as a jolt, and leaves us with a sense of emptiness and loss."

Brigid Cashman, a religious education instructor at Chicago's Frances Xavier Warde School, says George was both a symbol of courage and bravery as he battled polio as a child and cancer as an adult.

Cashman says she never heard George complain, adding he taught all how to deal with challenges life brings with "grace and gratitude."
