Cougars hold off LumberKings

Clinton collected only 1 hit, but that was still enough to make a dramatic evening. The Kane County Cougars (3-4) hung on for a 5-2 win over the LumberKings (2-5) at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva on Wednesday.

Jared Miller (1-1) saw a great turnaround from his last start as he reired 16 of first 17 LumberKings he faced. Working with a 3-0 lead, Miller didn't allow a baserunner until a one-out walk in the top of the fourth inning.

Clinton's first hit spoiled the no-hit bid - and the shutout - when Gianfracno Wawoe connected on a solo homer with one out in the top of the sixth.

The Cougars' Chuck Taylor had a pair of RBI singles and Marty Herum drove in 2 runs with a hit.

In the ninth, Cougars reliever Mason McCullough loaded the bases with 2 walks and a hit batter. But he recorded a strikeout and groundout for his second save.

The Cougars and LumberKings continue their series today at 11 a.m. when right-hander Jeferson Mejia (0-1, 7.20 ERA) takes the mound against Clinton's Tyler Herb (0-0, 6.75).
