214@100: Hersey, like its namesake, likes to give
The Hersey Family has long been recognized for its giving nature - and it started with the school's namesake, writer John Hersey, who gave all the money he made from the first reprint of his book, "Hiroshima" to the Red Cross. Hersey said he felt bad profiting from such a horrific event.
"I believe Hersey is especially driven to help others compared to other schools because we are not just a school or community, rather we are a family," said senior and Special Olympics coach Caitlin Nagle.
This year, students raised $18,000 for Sgt. Jason Smith, a veteran who lost both of his legs while serving in the Middle East. The money will help build him a house that accommodates his disabilities.
"I'm honored. It's crazy that people are willing to help support my family and trying to build me a home. It feels awesome," Smith said.
