Suburban rainfall totals: Lake County got the most

While parts of the state deal with tornado damage, many suburban residents are dealing with ponding water due to heavy rains overnight.

Lake County seemed to get the most rainfall Thursday, registering just short of three inches of water on the ground in Lake Villa and Beach Park, the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network is reporting.

Waukegan recorded two-and-a-half inches late Thursday.

In Kane County, Geneva recorded a little more than two inches, and Batavia picked up two inches. Lakemoor and Harvard in McHenry County registered just shy of 2 inches.

Elk Grove village in Cook County saw just above 2 inches of rain, while Bartlett saw 1.5 inches of rain.

One person was killed in Fairdale after supercell thunderstorms produced tornadoes in western Illinois.

The National Weather Service tweeted around 7 p.m. that a tornado was on the ground in Rochelle, on Route 72 west of Kane County.

Severe thunderstorms blew through Lake and McHenry counties after the tornadoes were reported touching down farther west. A tornado watch was in effect for most of the night covering all of the suburbs and most of north and central Illinois.

The National Weather Service said it could not confirm how many tornadoes struck the area, but said one long-tracked storm moved across multiple counties, sporadically touching down and causing damage.
