Get Money Smart at Schaumburg Library

From homebuying and predatory lending to stocks and retirement planning, Money Smart Week programs at the Schaumburg Township District Library will provide practical financial information. Programs will be held the week of April 18 at the Central Library in Schaumburg, as well as the branches in Hoffman Estates and Hanover Park. All of the following programs require registration.

"First-time Homebuyer" will be held from 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 18, in the Adult Classroom of the Central Library, 130 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg. Darryl Evans of Chicago Financial Services will help attendees understand the steps involved in buying a new home. Topics will include mortgage options, bank criteria, loan closing and more. "Understanding Annuities" is slated from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, April 20, in the Adult Classroom of the Central Library in Schaumburg. Financial educator Karen Chan, CFB, will help participants better understand these complex products, which differ greatly in terms of risks, costs, and potential benefits.

"When I'm 60" will take place from 6:30-8 p.m. Monday, April 20, at the Hoffman Estates Branch Library, 1550 Hassell Road, Hoffman Estates. Presenter Rajan B. Shah of Secure Capital Management USA LLC will discuss important retirement-related issues. Topics will include retirement planning, investments, expense strategies and more.

"You've Been Hacked" is scheduled from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, in the Adult Classroom of the Central Library in Schaumburg. Presenter Grant Hoover will provide tips for protecting data from hackers. Audience members will learn surprising aspects of computer security and how to ensure data protection, even when all else fails.

"Stocks: the Nuts and Bolts Seminar" is taking place from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, at the Hoffman Estates Branch Library. Presenter Becky Kwong of Edward Jones will provide basic information for helping investors evaluate stocks. Participants will learn about common and preferred stocks, dividends and investment strategies.

"Keep it Safe - Your Rights as a Consumer" is slated from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, in the Adult Classroom of the Central Library in Schaumburg. Courtney Turner of Schaumburg Bank and Trust Company will unveil ways to guard against predatory lending practices and identity theft, as well as how to prepare for disasters.

"Estate Planning" will be held from 2-3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23, at the Hanover Park Branch Library, 1266 Irving Park Road, Hanover Park. Alansa C. Ferguson of The Chicago Trust Company will discuss four legal documents every individual should have. He will cover the importance of wills, living trusts, trust administration, health care and property Power of Attorney.
