Wrigley's new open-door plan put into action

The portable toilets were in place, but there was no one to go.

Tuesday night's scheduled game between the Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field was postponed because of expected rain and cold weather.

The game was not immediately rescheduled. The two teams will play an afternoon game Wednesday, and the Cubs will take Thursday off before heading to Colorado for the weekend.

The Cardinals revisit Wrigley Field July 6-8 and again Sept. 18-20. The Cubs acted quickly to postpone Tuesday's 7:05 p.m. game, making their announcement at 1:20 p.m.

If nothing else, the postponement knocks one game off the early schedule that hot prospect Kris Bryant will have to miss before he's called up from Class AAA Iowa. For Bryant not to be credited with a full year of major-league time - and thus hastening his free-agency clock - the earliest he could come up is Friday, April 17, the beginning of a three-game home series against the Padres.

The Cubs looked ready to handle any kind of crowd that was going to show up Tuesday. Many portable toilets already were in place inside the concourse on the third-base side of the park, and others were outside the park.

Long lines at restrooms created a public-relations fiasco for the Cubs organization during and after Sunday night's season-opener. With some upper-deck restrooms being down, many fans had to wait in long lines to use the facilities, forcing them to miss significant amounts of game action.

The Cubs issued an apology and promised to have portable toilets in place for the rest of the series.

Rotation adjusted:

Jake Arrieta, the scheduled starting pitcher Tuesday for the Cubs, was set to take on the Cardinals' Lance Lynn.

Those two will match up at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday. For the weekend series at Coors Field, the Cubs will go with Travis Wood on Friday, Jason Hammel on Saturday and Kyle Hendricks on Sunday.

Jon Lester, who started Opening Night, will be pushed back to Monday night's series opener against the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field.
