Cubs apologize to fans for long lines at restrooms

The Cubs have apologized to their fans for extraordinarily long lines at Wrigley Field restrooms for Sunday night's home opener.

The 101-year-old ballpark is undergoing a major renovation, and some restrooms are not available. An opening-night crowd of 35,055 was on hand to see the Cubs lose 3-0 to the St. Louis Cardinals. Those who had to use the bathrooms reported standing in long lines in the concourse and missing several innings of the action on the field.

On Monday morning, the Cubs issued a statement apologizing for the inconvenience.

“Opening Day at Wrigley Field has always brought challenges with restroom wait times, (and) last night was particularly extreme,” a team statement read. “Two bathrooms in the upper deck went down temporarily forcing fans downstairs where we already were experiencing issues with long wait times.

“With 35,000 fans showing up in the ballpark, we were simply not prepared to handle guests during peak periods. We have high standards for service and we missed the mark last night.

“We want to apologize to our fans for the huge inconvenience. Moving forward we plan to supplement the existing restrooms with additional portable units and will continue to monitor wait times to ensure we can service our guests appropriately.”

There was no further elaboration from the Cubs. Monday is an off-day for the Cubs and Cardinals. The series against the Cardinals resumes Tuesday night.
