Poetry workshop addresses 'Writing with Spirit'

The Northwest Cultural Council announces a Second Saturday Poetry Workshop to be from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, April 11, led by Sarah Carson. Saturday's topic will be "Writing with Spirit."

Poet Jane Hirshfield said, "The root of 'spirit' is the Latin spirare, to breathe. Whatever lives on the breath, then, must have its spiritual dimension - including all poems, even the most unlikely."

In this session, Carson will take a look at where the spiritual intersects with the poetic, how some of the great poets have conjured the spiritual in their writing, and how poets can breathe some spirit into their work.

Carson was born and raised in Flint, Michigan, but now lives in Chicago, with her dog, Amos. She is the author of three chapbooks: "Before Onstar" (Etched Press, 2010), "Twenty-Two" (Finishing Line Press, 2011), and "When You Leave" (H_NGM_N, 2012). When she's not writing poems, she has a full-time job telling stories about how awesome the world can be when people care about each other. Sometimes she blogs at sarahamycarson.wordpress.com.

Participants are encouraged to bring 15 copies of their own work to share with the group. Workshops take place the second Saturday of each month, at the Palatine Public Library, 700 N. North Court, Palatine. All poets and writers are invited to attend the workshop. The cost is $15. R.S.V.P. to (847) 382-6922 or email at nwcc@att.net.
