Zion police officer shoots, kills teen

A Zion police officer shot and killed a teen Saturday afernoorn near the intersection of 24th Street and Galilee Avenue, according to police.

Police received a 911 call from a man who said a gunshot had been fired during argument or fight on the 2300 block of Gileade Avenue, according to a news release. When Zion police officers arrived on the scene less than a minute after the call was received, the teen immediately fled on foot to the south.

Shortly after the chase started around 2 p.m., a Zion Police officer shot the teen.

Witnesses to the shooting told ABC 7 reporters that they heard two gunshots and that the teen was shot in the back.

Officers immediately administered medical aid to the teen, who was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The officer was uninjured and was transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

Police said a handgun was recovered at the scene of the shooting.

Investigators have not identified the officer or the teen who was killed. Police did not say whether the teen fired shots at the officer.

A Zion police official could not be immediately reached for comment Sunday.
