One injured as fire destroys St. Charles home
Editor's note: This story has been updated to correct that the fire on Timber Trail near St. Charles occurred in the Hazelwood subdivision. A nearby subdivision, The Windings, does have fire hydrants.
A two-story home near St. Charles that was gutted in a fire Saturday morning will have to be torn down, authorities said.
No firefighters were injured, but one of the residents was treated for a minor burn at the home, Elburn & Countryside Fire Protection District Chief Kelly Callaghan said.
At about 8:47 a.m., the district was called on a report of a fire in a garage attached to the home on the 5N800 block of Timber Trail in the Hazelwood subdivision. The first arriving firefighters found the garage engulfed in flames, along with two cars in the driveway. The fire had already spread to the house.
Because there are no fire hydrants in the area, water had to be hauled in on tankers to extinguish the blaze. It took firefighters from a dozen departments about an hour to put it out.
The residents were home at the time and escaped before firefighters arrived. The American Red Cross is helping them find temporary housing, according to a statement from Callaghan.
Investigators are probing the cause. Damage estimates weren't immediately available.
