Barrington topples young Huntley

With Brandon Altergott the lone starter back from last year, Huntley baseball coach Andy Jakubowski realizes the wins will be hard to come by early in the 2015 campaign.

With Barrington scoring 7 runs in the fourth inning, the Broncos were able to cruise past the host Red Raiders 9-4 in nonconference action Tuesday afternoon in Huntley.

Huntley drops to 0-3 while Barrington moves to 3-4.

"We are very inexperienced and we played three tough MSL teams to start the season," said Jakubowski. "I am proud of the fact the kids are competing. Our approach at the plate has improved every game. We don't want the kids to press and be frustrated. We need to clean up some things on defense and we will be OK."

The Red Raiders competed with the Broncos early in the game.

Huntley starter David Cruz allowed only 1 run through 3 innings on a sacrifice fly by winning pitcher Anthony DeLaurentis.

Barrington seized control of the game with its big fourth inning. Jake Peterson and Jake Coon collected 2-RBI singles while Luke Johnson

lofted a sacrifice fly.

DeLaurentis, mixing his pitches, blanked Huntley on 3 hits through 5 innings. The Barrington right-hander allowed his lone run in the sixth on a leadoff homer by Altergott. In 6 innings of work, DeLaurentis gave up a run on 5 hits while striking out 4 with 2 walks.

"Anthony is a position player and we don't want to wear him down," said Barrington coach Pat Wire. "We want to be smart with him early in the nonconference part of our schedule. He is a special kid. He is a success story in the program. He was a freshman B player and he is now our number 1 starter."

Huntley roughed up Barrington reliever Connor O' Keefe for 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh on a pinch-hit 3-run homer by Ryan McGran.

Coon paced Barrington with 2 hits and 3 RBI while Casey Dodge collected 2 hits with a double and 2 runs scored.

'We lost some games on our spring trip in Georgia but we won't panic," said Wire. "We are learning through the nonconference action. I liked our approach at the plate today and we hit the ball up and down the lineup."
