4-H members advance to national dairy quiz bowl
Four 4-H members earned the right to advance to the National 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Contest during the statewide 4-H contest held Saturday, March 7 at the Chateau Hotel and Conference Center in Bloomington.
The national competition team includes Bria Koester, Dakota; Brock Irwin, Belvidere; Charlie Elliot, Freeport; and Julia Mitchell, Winnebago.
First alternate is Elizabeth Koester, Red Bud; and second alternate is Adam Olbrich, Harvard.
The Illinois state 4-H team will compete at the National 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Contest in Louisville, Ky. this fall.
The national team is supported by funds from the Illinois 4-H Foundation.
Thirty-eight 4-H members from 12 counties participated in the contest, including Kane County 4-H'er Kristina Drendel, 14, of Hampshire.
The dairy quiz bowl challenges the 4-H members' knowledge and quick recall of information relating to the various aspects of dairy cattle management and dairy products. Each competition round included 12 questions presented one-on-one followed by 16 tossup questions with bonus point options.
"The 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl requires many hours of dedicated learning and a good understanding of the dairy industry," said Dave Fischer, retired University of Illinois Extension specialist, who coordinated the contest.
