Should all day care workers be vaccinated?

Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno wants to require most day care workers to prove immunity to measles, mumps and rubella in order to work with children 6 years old and younger.

The move comes in response to this year's measles outbreak in the suburbs where 13 of 15 cases were linked to a Palatine KinderCare.

Illinois doesn't have a vaccine requirement for day care workers, but the Department of Children and Family Services wants all day care centers to have their own policies in place.

Radogno's plan would push the issue further, requiring that workers either be vaccinated or show proof they are otherwise immune to the diseases.

"I think it raised everyone's awareness that obviously we're not perfect at protecting against this disease," Radogno, of Lemont, said.

The plan was approved unanimously by a Senate committee Wednesday without debate, moving the plan forward to the full Senate.
