Police: Huntley man killed his wife

A 64-year-old Huntley man was charged with murder after his 63-year-old wife died from injuries suffered during a domestic battery, police said Wednesday.

Edward Hartgraves, of the 10000 block of Longfield Drive, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Carol Hartgraves, police said.

Police responded to a 911 call from the couple's home, made by Edward Hartgraves, art 5:24 p.m. Friday. They found Carol Hartgraves bleeding from the chin, disoriented, and unable to give a detailed account of what had happened, police said.

She was taken to Centegra Hospital-Woodstock for treatment. She received six stitches to her chin and was suffering from a broken arm.

Police took Hartgraves into custody and initially charged him with two counts of aggravated domestic battery, two counts of domestic battery and one count of violating an order of protection. He was taken to McHenry County jail, where he posted bond and was released.

Carol Hartgraves died Monday due to complications from multiple injuries. An autopsy was conducted Tuesday, after which the McHenry County state's attorney's office amended the charges to first-degree murder.

Hartgraves was being held at the McHenry County jail on $5 million bail. He is due in court at 9 a.m. Friday.

Police said there was a history of domestic abuse.

The couple previously lived in Schaumburg, where police arrested Hartgraves in November 2014 on a domestic battery charge. A Cook County court later issued an order of protection against him, police said.

Carol Hartgraves allowed her husband to live with her, police said. The couple moved to Huntley in January 2015.

"They do have children. They were living in the home alone," Huntley Deputy Chief Michael Klunk said.

On Feb. 2, Carol Hartgraves accused her husband of threatening her. Hartgraves was later arrested on charges of violating the earlier order of protection, police said.

Authorities don't know whether Carol Hartgraves had filed for divorce, Klunk added.

"We're still trying to do some background (investigation). Our work here is not done," he added.
