Prospect produces extra-inning win
Prospect's softball team worked overtime on Thursday to improve to 2-0 with a 6-5 victory in eight innings over host Elgin.
The Knights trailed 5-4 in the top of the seventh when Casey Lenski led off with a line-drive home run to tie the game.
In the top of the eighth, the Knights had two outs when Alyssa Cacini (3-for-4, walk, 2 runs) tripled to right-center.
An errant relay throw allowed the freshman to score and Prospect to came away with the hard-fought triumph.
"I give a lot of credit to both teams," said Prospect coach Jim Adair. "It's early in the season and Elgin had a tough loss (12-4 to Hoffman on Wednesday) but they came back and fought us every inch of the way. I was extremely impressed with the resilience my team showed.
"We were up, then down, but my whole team felt like we were going to eventually win this game."
Prospect opened the scoring in the top of the third when Cacini had an infield hit with one out.
With two outs, Lenski (2-for-5, 2 RBI) doubled to left center to score Cacini and freshman Lauren Caldrone doubled to drive home Lenski.
Elgin answered in the bottom of the third when Sabrina Stockholm reached on an infield error and Destiny West followed with a 2-run homer.
Prospect regained the lead the lead in the fourth.
Jenny Krengiel led off with a double and scored on a RBI ground out by Kelly Marshall.
Elgin scored 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Ayanna Herrera (2-for-3) doubled to lead off. Stockholm singled to score Herrera and then scored herself on a single by Cassidy Sell.
Prospect added a run in the sixth inning when Erica Nelson walked and was singled home by Cacini.
Junior Delilah Malczewski (2-0) earned the win for the Knights, tossing a 5-hitter with 5 strikeouts.
