Medallions from Lincoln hearse going on exhibit at museum

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Two silver medallions from Abraham Lincoln's hearse will be displayed at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum as part of an exhibit marking the 150th anniversary of his assassination.

The medallions haven't been seen by the public since Lincoln's funeral in 1865, and were separated shortly afterward.

Historians thought they'd been destroyed in an 1887 fire that burned the hearse that carried Lincoln's body to Springfield's Oak Ridge Cemetery.

But the hearse's owner had removed the medallions. One ended up at the St. Louis Mercantile Library at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, the other at the private Harlan Crow Library in Dallas.

The exhibit runs April 2 through early July. It'll include dozens of items, including the last surviving photo of Lincoln in his coffin.
