House committee set to vote on bill banning powdered alcohol

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A state House committee is set to vote on a proposal that would ban powdered alcohol in Indiana.

One ounce of powdered alcohol can be mixed with any liquid to create an instant alcoholic drink that has the same alcoholic content as a shot of liquor. The product called Palcohol is the first powdered alcohol product to receive federal approval. It comes in four different flavors: rum, vodka, cosmopolitan and margarita.

The House Public Policy Committee is scheduled to vote Wednesday on a measure that would make it illegal to own, buy, sell or use the product in Indiana.

Supporters of the bill say the product encourages underage drinking and could easily be concealed.

Lawmakers in other states including Colorado, Iowa, and Illinois are considering similar legislation.
