Taylor gets 3 hits as Mariners beat Brewers 10-5

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) - Chris Taylor got three hits and Mike Zunino had a two-run single Friday as the Seattle Mariners beat the Milwaukee Brewers 10-5.

J.A. Happ, slated for the Seattle starting rotation, blanked the Brewers for three innings, allowing a hit and striking out two.

"Happ threw the ball extremely well. Pitched in the zone, his secondary stuff was good. It was a good outing for him," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said.

Taylor, competing to be the club's everyday shortstop, hit a triple and raised his spring training average to .421. His eight hits and 16 total bases lead the Mariners so far in spring training.

Juan Centeno homered for the Brewers.

K-ROD

Brewers reliever Francisco Rodriguez got to camp for a physical. His arrival was delayed by visa issues in his native Venezuela.

"Everything he does, you look at what guys add on," manager Ron Roenicke said. "Frankie's a guy that knows how to prepare, he knows the ups and downs of a season and he always helps those guys in getting through it."

Rodriguez will throw some bullpen sessions before taking the mound in a game, Roenicke said.

CANO RETURNS

All-Star second baseman Robinson Cano returned to the Mariners after going home to the Dominican Republic following the death of his grandfather. Cano worked out on Friday and could be back in the lineup as soon as Saturday.

STARTING TIME

Brewers: Mike Fiers allowed three earned runs on five hits and walked three in two innings, his second start of the spring. He's trying to build off a solid end of the 2014 season when he went 6-4 with a 2.09 ERA in 10 starts.

"Walks hurt me, it's going to hurt me in any game," Fiers said. "Got to my pitch count and just have to go 10 or 15 more next time."

Mariners: Happ had an improved outing from the two runs on two hits in two innings he allowed in his first spring training start.

"Better than last time for sure. Little more sharp," Happ said. "I'm pleased with that. Location, getting ahead and my offspeed was a little bit better."

TRAINER'S ROOM

Brewers: OF Ryan Braun was scratched from the lineup before Friday's game due to flu-like symptoms, replaced in right field by Logan Schafer. ... SS Jean Segura took a hard groundball from the Mariners' Nelson Cruz to his midsection when trying to field it, and had to be checked by a trainer. He stayed in the game and was charged with an error on the third-inning play. Roenicke said Segura was fine.

Mariners: Taylor took a ball of his hand on a foul tip, but stayed in the game and singled in the same sixth-inning at-bat before being lifted for a pinch-runner. "They said he's OK," McClendon said. ... OF Rickie Weeks (hamstring) could return as the designated hitter Saturday.

UP NEXT

Brewers: RHP Jimmy Nelson gets the call against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday in Mesa, Ariz. He is expected to be the Brewers' fifth starter this season.

Mariners: Taijuan Walker will look to continue his strong case for a spot in the starting rotation when he goes against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
