Fenninger leads after 1st run of World Cup giant slalom

ARE, Sweden (AP) - Anna Fenninger took the lead over a pair of Austrian teammates Friday after the first run of a World Cup giant slalom race.

Fenninger leads Kathrin Zettel by .50 seconds and Eva-Maria Brem by 0.56. Sara Hector of Sweden was fourth and Nadia Fanchini of Italy was fifth.

Overall World Cup leader Tina Maze and American skier Mikaela Shiffrin were tied for sixth place, 1.12 seconds behind Fenninger.

Maze needs to move closer to Fenninger in the second run Friday to avoid losing her No. 1 position in the overall standings.

Fenninger is the defending overall and giant slalom champion. She also leads this season's giant slalom standings and is second overall behind Maze.
