China political advisers cheer on Winter Olympics bid

BEIJING (AP) - Chinese political advisers are cheering on Beijing's 2022 Winter Olympics bid ahead of venue inspections by the International Olympic Committee, with one saying a rise in sports injuries in recent months speaks to the public's growing enthusiasm for winter sports.

The head of Beijing's Sports Medicine Hospital, Li Guoping, says he's seen more patients with winter sports injuries. A member of the main government advisory body, Li says that reflects the growing popularity of winter sports among residents.

Another government adviser, former NBA star Yao Ming, was quoted as saying Friday by the official Xinhua News Agency that the outdoor nature of the Winter Olympics will make sports more accessible.

Beijing and Almaty, Kazakhstan, are the only contenders for the 2022 Games hosting rights. IOC inspections in Beijing begin March 24.
