Aurora fire leaves home uninhabitable
Aurora fire officials said a woman's life was saved this week when her neighbor alerted her to a fire in their building.
Firefighters were called to the 500 block of Binder Street on Monday and found fire coming from the basement and first floor, according to a news release.
A resident from the building's upstairs apartment found the fire and notified her neighbor, who was sleeping in the basement. The woman in the basement was taken to Rush Copley Medical Center for treatment
The fire left about $85,000 worth of damage to the structure and contents, officials said, and the home was left uninhabitable. The city's Victims Services Unit helped residents find places to stay.
The fire department determined the victim fell asleep with food cooking on the stove, the release said, and there were no working smoke detectors in the building.
