Plungers take on Lake Zurich's icy waters to raise money for Relay for Life

More than 100 people hit the icy waters of Lake Zurich Saturday, as part of the Purple Plunge at Breezewald Beach and Park.

Dressed in costumes, the plungers immersed themselves to raise money for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life of Lake Zurich/Wauconda/Island Lake. It's the second annual plunge for this cause.

Richard Lind, of Lake Zurich, was among the participants braving the icy waters on a 45-degree morning.

“It's for a great cause,” Lind said. “I'm so glad they put me in charge of the weather today.”

Event organizer Paul Hunt said that just a few days ago, as crews cut through 18 inches of ice along the shoreline, he was't certain that the event would take place.

“We totally lucked out with the weather,” Hunt said. “I'm impressed with the outpouring of support from everybody.”

A post-plunge party was held at Scoreboard Bar & Grill with music, raffles and a recognition ceremony.
