Key lawmakers draw scrutiny for ties to stadium company

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Two Indiana lawmakers who have championed tougher ethics rules at the Statehouse are drawing scrutiny over business ties to a soccer team that wants to build a new stadium.

The Indiana House has approved spending $82 million on a new stadium for the Indy Eleven soccer team. House Speaker Brian Bosma and House Ethics Committee Chairman Rep. Greg Steurwald both do legal work for the team and its owner and did not participate in the vote.

Julia Vaughn of Common Cause Indiana tells The Indianapolis Star (http://indy.st/1EqqC1u ) that Bosma should have disclosed his work with the team before the vote. She notes that Steurwald voted for similar legislation last year and questions his contention that he abstained this year because of new ethics rules.
