Fremd nets weekly team honor from Sky
The Chicago Sky has selected Fremd's girls basketball team as the 11th High School Team of the Week winner for its 2015 competition.
Fremd earned the honor after being nominated for outstanding efforts and achievements as a team and within the community.
Fremd secured its sixth straight Mid-Suburban West title during the 2015 regular season. The team entered the state playoffs with a goal of winning the first girls basketball state title in school history. Earlier this week, Fremd defeated Huntley in the Class 4A Hoffman Estates supersectional to win its first supersectional title since 1977.
The Vikings (28-4) next meet New Trier in the state semifinals on Friday night at Redbird Arena in Normal.
Senior guard Haley Gorecki has been Fremd's leader on the court and in the community this season. The Duke-bound guard was selected as one of Gatorade's Three Pillar Candidates. Each year, Gatorade recognizes one student-athlete from each of the 50 states and Washington, D.C. who embodies its Player of the Year program's three pillars: athletic production, academic achievement and exemplary character.
Finishing her career as the second player in Fremd girl's basketball history to reach 2,000-plus points, Gorecki also serves as a member of Fremd's National Honor Society chapter and volunteers locally on behalf of an animal shelter.
Gorecki's actions have inspired the entire Fremd team to give back in the community this season. When the Vikings aren't on the court, they spend their time volunteering with Feed my Starving Children to package food for malnourished children in over 70 countries. The Vikings also participate in Read-to-Connect, where they visit with local elementary schools and read to the students.
Fremd and Prospect have been among the Team of the Week award winners this season. Each winner will be invited to enjoy a Chicago Sky game, where they will have the opportunity to watch the world's best female basketball players. At halftime of the game, the team will be honored at center court.
All IHSA teams are eligible to win a weekly honor. Nominations from parents, coaches, school faculty members and players are welcome and should be completed on the Chicago Sky website (www.chicagosky.net) through March 11.
At the end of the 12-week program, each weekly winning team will be entered to win the High School Team of the Year award for 2015. The winner, determined through online voting, will be announced at halftime at a 2015 Chicago Sky game.
