Former Tottenham captain Dave Mackay dies at 80
LONDON (AP) - Dave Mackay, a former Tottenham captain who also won the English league and FA Cup double with the club in 1961, has died. He was 80.
Tottenham announced Mackay's death late Monday, but did not give a cause.
Mackay joined Tottenham in 1959 from Scottish club Hearts and became "one of the most influential players of his era," Tottenham said on its website.
Mackay won the FA Cup three times before leaving Tottenham for Derby in 1968. He also played 22 times for Scotland.
"He was the heartbeat of our 1961 'double' side, was then a key member of the team that retained the FA Cup the following season," Tottenham said.
