I was a trustee from 2001-2013 so I'm experienced. I'm visible and approachable at many village functions. I've been an active volunteer in South Elgin since moving to the village in 1990. I've volunteered on the Park and Recreation Board, The RiverFest committee, the FUNdation, the playground committee. My commitment, preparation and experience in South Elgin make me the best candidate. What is your opinion of your community's present level of local sales and property taxes? Is the tax just right, too low or too high? Explain. While everyone would like lower taxes the village has done a good job of providing needed services while keeping taxes lower than our neighboring communities. I'm always looking for ways to save money.Rate the efficiency of your town's police and fire coverage. Are the departments well prepared for the next decade? What, if anything, should be changed? Do you have specific public safety concerns? The Fire District is a separate taxing body which the village works closely with but the Village Board has no control over. The police department is growing and has done well with the space it has. The department has done a good job of transitioning to a new dispatch location. Having consolidated the dispatch and sharing costs with Kane County and other departments the village will save a lot of money when computer and communication updates are needed.Where, if anywhere, could the current budget be trimmed, and conversely, are there areas the budget does not give enough money to?The Village has done a good job budgeting and following through on the budget. Since I was elected in 2001 the village has received awards for the detail and ability to follow the budget. While going through the budget process every spring the Village Board and Village Manager and department directors go over every line item for all expenditures. I'll always be looking for more efficient processes and more effective ways to save money. What's one good idea you have to better the community that no one is talking about yet?In June weather permitting a new playground in SEBA park will open. After over 3 years of fund raising the community will have a one of a kind unique park. After raising over $900,000 towards our total goal of $1,400,000 we will have 2/3 of the park complete this summer! It will be a regional park designed to be accessible for children and adults of all abilities! There are links on the South Elgin Park and Recreation or the South Elgin FUNdation's website. This entire park will be built with donated money! No South Elgin tax money was used. And we still have great opportunities for individuals and groups and companies to be a part of this great project! This project will make our riverfront more attractive while bringing people to our village center! It will be an all inclusive playground with programming that will benefit children and adults for years to follow! What other issues, if any, are important to you as a candidate for this office?I'll always stay active in my community. I enjoy volunteering and being a part of the solution . I believe 3 of the most important things the Village Board does are hire the Village Administrator and department directors, formulate and pass the yearly budget and make sure the village spends it's money wisely and efficiently, have long term plans to follow that give the village direction in attracting businesses and residents. Please name one current leader who most inspires you.Any intelligent leader who is willing to listen and learn and at times compromise. A leader who leads by example in both words and actions! What's the biggest lesson you learned at home growing up?Work hard, always do your best and give back by volunteering in your communityIf life gave you one do-over, what would you spend it on?I'd would have gone to a small college and played footballWhat was your favorite subject in school and how did it help you in later life?Science and math I still enjoy learning new thingsIf you could give your children only one piece of advice, what would it be?Be honest and lead by example!
