Flamingo exhibit in Bloomington stalled by projected costs

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) - Construction of a flamingo exhibit at a central Illinois zoo has been stalled because of projected costs.

The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reports (http://bit.ly/1wonkv5 ) the city council in Bloomington decided Monday to put the project out for bid again. Four bids came in higher than expected for building a new flamingo exhibit at Bloomington's Miller Park Zoo.

The city has allocated $150,000 for the project and the Miller Park Zoological Society is contributing $100,000. But the lowest of four construction bids was more than $331,000.

Zoo Superintendent Jay Tetzloff says the architect believes the design can be modified to bring down construction costs. The original design includes an island for the flamingos to nest, a pool, a land area and a holding building.
