Know signs of gambling problem

With more opportunities to gamble throughout our community than ever before, the harder it will be for the problem gambler to resist. March is National Gambling Awareness Month, and I would like to encourage anyone who gambles to keep track of their wins and loses, and if the loses add up to gambling debt it's time to seek professional help.

Common signs of a problem gambler often include: Lying to your partner about where you've been and how you've spent your money; lost sleep due to gambling stress and anxiety; reducing time one spends with family and work to gamble; feeling guilty about gambling; trying to cut back in gambling without success.

Gambling disorders are treatable. Renz Addiction Counseling Center is offering free gambling assessments throughout 2015 and free treatment during March at the Two American Way location in Elgin. For more information on Renz Center's problem gambling services, visit www.RenzCenter.org or call the Center at (847) 742-3545.
