Stair climbers' efforts top $1 million

Four thousand people raised more than $1 million for medical research by climbing the stairs of the John Hancock building as part of the Respiratory Health Association's 18th annual Hustle Up the Hancock fundraiser Sunday.

According to a news release from the health association Sunday evening, the money goes toward RHA's research, education and advocacy activities that benefit community lung health.

U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk and Chicago Blackhawks' mascot Tommy Hawk were among the climbers, many of whom were patients or friends and family of those touched by lung disease.

"It is an honor to join all the climbers and fellow battle buddies as we Hustle Up the Hancock this Sunday. Not only will each of us benefit from a physical challenge, but we will also raise awareness about a devastating disease that took my father - pulmonary fibrosis," Kirk said. "Climbing stairs has motivated me throughout my recovery and I encourage anyone facing a challenge to consider a climb."

Many people carried mementos and photographs of their loved ones to the top with them.
