What the law says on distracted driving
• Illinois' distracted driving law enacted Jan. 1, 2014, prohibits using hand-held cellphones, texting or using other electronic communications while driving a vehicle.
• Hands-free devices and Bluetooth technology are allowed for people 19 and older.
• Exceptions to the law apply if you are: reporting an emergency situation, parked on the shoulder of a roadway, or stopped because normal traffic is obstructed and your vehicle is in neutral or park.
