Chicago Public Schools cancels Thursday classes due to cold

CHICAGO (AP) - Thursday classes have been cancelled by Chicago Public Schools.

With the National Weather Service forecasting extreme cold accompanied by high winds, CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett said Wednesday exposing students to cold in order to attend class would "present real dangers."

District officials say although classes are cancelled, schools will be open and will accept students who show up.

Officials say weather conditions are being monitored, and they anticipate classes resuming on Friday.

Chicago Public Schools, the nation's third largest school district, serves 396,000 students in 664 schools.
