Endorsements: Tibbits for Prospect Heights treasurer
On the heels of a November referendum where Prospect Heights voters said they want to choose their city treasurer, two candidates are running for that position.
Three-term incumbent Richard Tibbits is challenged by newcomer Kathryn Michaely. Both agree the position is mainly an oversight role and both see a bright future for their city. But it is in experience and knowledge where they differ.
Tibbits, who says "Trust, but verify," tells us the treasurer needs to be an independent eye. Beyond his treasurer experience, Tibbits has been an outspoken proponent for bringing water to the west side of town and has helped set up the city council's AV facilities to broadcast meetings. Michaely, president of the Rob Roy Country Club Village association, says she was surprised when after the November election Mayor Nick Helmer asked her to run and that if elected, she has a lot to learn.
While newcomers do provide a fresh perspective, in this case, Tibbits brings a grasp and awareness of city issues and an understanding of today's communications modes as well as an independent voice to the position. For those reasons, the Daily Herald endorses Richard Tibbits for city treasurer.
