Rosemont to build new salt storage facility

Rosemont will be tearing down its old salt storage building next month and constructing a new one with a larger capacity.

The existing building at 7048 Barry St. is able to store 500 tons of salt, but a new 61-foot diameter dome will have room for 1,600 tons, which should be enough salt for a full year, said Mark Wrzeszcz, an engineer with Christopher B. Burke Engineering, the village's engineering consultant.

Officials say the back wall of the current salt facility collapsed when crews tried to pack too much salt into it.

A concrete block wall is being installed connecting the new dome and the village public works building. A community mural will be painted on one side of the wall, overlooking a new turf field next to the Barry Street Recreation Center.

The price for the work is $324,780.
