Libertyville schools get a jump on celebrating Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day falls on Saturday this year, but that didn't stop schools in Libertyville Elementary District 70 from continuing their tradition of Friday-afternoon parties to celebrate the event.

Students in grades K-5 participated one-hour parties in their classrooms as they exchanged valentines and played games.

Adler Park School fourth grade teacher Michelle Menoni held a contest for the students' Valentine's Day boxes that were judged by the third grade classes. Prizes were given for the most original, silliest and prettiest Valentine's Day box.

Both fifth-grade classes at Adler Park School had their party in the gym, where students played games including Twister, Dance Dance Revolution, Baggo and sampled treats brought in by parents.

Assistant Principal and physical education teacher Gerry Carollo said the district tradition of Friday-afternoon Valentine's Day parties has been going on as long as he can remember.

"They look forward to it and the parents put together a great afternoon for them," Carollo said.
