Germany charges 22-year-old with membership in Islamic State
BERLIN (AP) - Federal German prosecutors say they've charged a 22-year-old man with membership in a terrorist organization on allegations that he trained and fought with the Islamic State group in Syria.
Prosecutors said Wednesday that Nezet S., whose last name was not released in accordance with German privacy laws, traveled in July last year to Syria through Turkey. There, they say, the German citizen allegedly underwent weapons training and "took part multiple times in fighting."
Prosecutors say the suspect remained in Syria through August 2014 and then returned to Germany. Duesseldorf prosecutors initially investigated him and then federal prosecutors took over after evidence emerged that he had joined the Islamic State group.
