Status on Flood Studies to Improve Ability of Sewer Systems

The Village anticipates reviewing draft reports over the coming months on two comprehensive flood studies authorized by the Village Board after the July 23, 2011 record-breaking rain event that caused flooding issues for many residents. It is anticipated that the findings of these studies will be discussed with the public in late Spring or early Summer of this year.

The two studies authorized by the Village Board include one that focuses on the problem areas in the Village's separate sewer system, conducted by Christopher B. Burke Engineering, Ltd; and the other involves an analysis of the combined sewer area, which includes all of the areas that experienced problems in July of 2011. The study on the Combined Sewer Tributary Area (CSTA) is being performed by CDM Smith Engineering.

Creating plans to address flooding and make improvements to the Village's aging infrastructure remains a very active project for the Public Works and Engineering Departments. The two studies have taken longer than originally anticipated because of the complex network of pipes within the combined sewer area that resulted in a time-consuming task of developing an accurate computer model.

The formulation of a computer model was also delayed because of the drought that occurred during the flow monitoring of the combined sewer system. A much more accurate, but time-intensive method, was completed by the Village to obtain real-time data during storm events. This information was crucial to ensure that the most accurate model of our system is created so we can recommend improvements that reduce flooding within the Village.

The Village is entering into the phase of work that entails:

• Review draft reports from the consultants that should be provided in the next few months.

• Provide feedback to the consultants on changes needed to develop the best model possible for improvements.

• Study how proposed improvements will reduce the impact of significant flooding events in the Village.

• Develop estimated costs for the improvements.

• Discussion with the Village Board to discuss the findings of the two studies and related costs. This major project is part of the five-year Village's Capital Improvement Plan (CIP).

The Village will keep residents updated on the status of this important project on our website, www.vah.com.
