3 killed, 2 injured in northwest Indiana crash
GARY, Ind. (AP) - Police say three passengers from Illinois were killed when the vehicle's driver lost control after trying to pass a semi-trailer on the outer shoulder of a highway in northwest Indiana.
According to authorities, 21-year-old Shaquita Kendrick of Markham died after she was thrown from the front seat of the vehicle in the early Sunday morning crash on the Borman Expressway. Calumet City residents 20-year-old Timothy Riley and 21-year-old William Burton Jr. also were killed.
The Indiana State Police reports the vehicle hit a concrete barrier, flipped on top of the wall and hit a pole before splitting in two.
Two other people were injured in the crash and taken to local hospitals. A fourth passenger suffered from internal injuries and the driver's injuries weren't life-threatening.
State police say charges against the 22-year-old driver are pending.
