3 Chicago residents killed in northwest Indiana highway crash
GARY, Ind. (AP) - Police say three suburban Chicago passengers were killed when their vehicle went off the road when the driver tried to pass a semi-trailer on a highway in northwest Indiana.
Authorities say 21-year-old Shaquita Kendrick of Markham, Illinois, died after she was thrown from the front seat in the early Sunday morning crash on the Borman Expressway. Calumet City, Illinois, residents 20-year-old Timothy Riley and 21-year-old William Burton Jr. also were killed.
Indiana State Police say the vehicle hit a concrete barrier, flipped on top of the wall and hit a pole before splitting in two.
Two other people were injured in the crash and taken to hospitals. A fourth passenger suffered from internal injuries. The driver's injuries weren't life-threatening.
State police say charges against the 22-year-old driver are pending.
