Detroit-area prep coach quits after player is slapped

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. (AP) - A coach who led a suburban Detroit high school basketball team to the state championship game last season has resigned after officials learned that he slapped a player.

The Bloomfield Hills district says Duane Graves resigned Thursday after officials investigated the allegations.

Graves told The Oakland Press (http://bit.ly/1C49w7y ) he was resigning for personal reasons. He didn't mention the slap to the newspaper or allegations that he referred to another player's hair as "nappy." Reached again, Graves declined to comment.

The district says he apologized to the players.

Bloomfield Hills High advanced to the Class A championship game last season but lost to Muskegon. It was the first appearance by an Oakland County school in the Class A title game since 2002.
