Flint hockey team could be 'Tropics,' 'Vikings' or 'Pride'
FLINT, Mich. (AP) - The Ontario Hockey League team that's scheduled to start playing in Flint later this year could be named the "Flint Tropics," ''Vikings" or "Pride."
The Flint Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1KoHvLX ) Friday those are among the names registered with the state. Others are "Phoenix" and "Sparks."
An online contest to name the team started this week. The winning idea - to be announced later this month - will be good for a pair of season tickets for the 2015-16 season and a team-autographed jersey.
The Flint Tropics is a favorite on social media and recalls the basketball team name from the 2008 Will Ferrell film, "Semi-Pro," which was set and partially filmed in Flint.
League officials recently approved plans to sell the Plymouth Whalers and move the team to Flint.
