Lake County Housing Authority Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer David A. Northern Sr. received the 2015 Most Influential African American of Lake County Award Sunday, Jan. 25, at an event hosted by Chicago People's Voice newspaper in Waukegan.

This award honors Northern as an outstanding individual who has shown strong leadership, compassion, and a magnanimous attitude toward his fellow man and who has excelled in his field. It also recognizes that he has, through his work in the Lake County community and at LCHA, improved the quality of life and conditions of the community.

Stedman Graham was the keynote speaker for the event and delivered a powerful, motivational speech. Awards were also presented to a number of noteworthy Lake County African Americans in the categories of Civic Leadership, Community Service, Political Leadership, Religious Leadership, Freedom, and Vision.

In attendance was U.S. Housing and Urban Development official William E. Wilkins, director of the Illinois Office of Public Housing, along with other state and local elected officials.

The Illinois House of Representatives, in House Resolution HR0053, introduced by Sam Yingling, State Representative 62nd District, congratulated Northern on this achievement. The resolution can be viewed at www.ilga.gov/legislation/99/HR/09900HR0053.htm.

After being presented the award, Northern commented, "It is truly a great honor to be recognized for our service to the community. I consider it a privilege to be able to provide housing opportunities, education, and increased self-sufficiency to our clients."

In June 2014, Northern was selected as one of 50 seasoned executives throughout the United States and abroad to participate in the NeighborWorks Achieving Excellence Program, conducted in collaboration with Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government.
