Maine Township selects alternative electricity provider
Maine Township has selected an alternative electricity provider for residents and businesses in unincorporated areas, though property owners are allowed to opt-out of the program.
The township board's selection of Constellation Energy follows voter approval in November of a measure allowing the board to explore getting an alternative supplier in an effort to find rates cheaper than ComEd's.
The two-year contract will see customers pay 6.91 cent per kilowatt hour in the first year and a 6.26 cent rate the second year. After two years, the township will be able to seek new bids or renegotiate.
Township officials said they plan to send a notice to residents and businesses informing them of the change, and how to opt-out of the program.
