Mental evaluation delays progress in Evansville murder case

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - A delayed mental evaluation for a 20-year-old man accused of fatally shooting another man while he slept is impeding progress in the Evansville murder case.

Mason James Hughes of Evansville is charged in the May 2014 slaying of 68-year-old Gilbert Dossett. The Evansville Courier & Press (http://bit.ly/18N4J0G ) reports he faces a possible life sentence without parole in a murder trial that's set to begin March 6.

Hughes' defense attorney told the judge Tuesday that he's concerned because only one of two psychiatric doctors appointed to evaluate his client has finished a report. He said nothing can be done without the second evaluation and time to review it.

His co-defendant, 47-year-old Brenda Dossett, was sentenced in December to 60 years in prison. She testified that she offered to buy Hughes a car if he killed her estranged husband.
