Detroit Zoo gets 3 new penguins amid work on new center

ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) - The Detroit Zoo has a few new penguins.

The zoo in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak says the gentoo penguins include a female named Philly and males Popeye and Simon.

They're just over a year old and are the first of their species to arrive at the zoo. Wednesday's announcement comes as work continues on the $29.5 million Polk Penguin Conservation Center. They join a flock of king, rockhopper and macaroni penguins at the zoo's Penguinarium.

More gentoos will arrive in the coming months as completion of the Polk Penguin Conservation Center nears. It's under construction on a 2-acre site just inside the zoo's entrance and is scheduled to open in early 2016. The Penguinarium will become a bat conservation center.
