Chicago mayoral candidates debate winter parking 'dibs'

CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago's mayoral candidates are debating finances and education, along with one of the city's winter street parking traditions.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and three challengers were asked at a Wednesday debate at public television station WTTW if they agree with the concept of "dibs." That's when Chicagoans who've shoveled their parking spots after heavy snowfall put a chair or other item to hold the spot. Some object and it's sometimes triggered vandalism.

Emanuel says it should be allowed at least for a time. He says he believes in "sweat equity."

Cook County Commissioner Jesus Garcia says he doesn't like it, but that it's part of Chicago culture. He says maybe block clubs could help with snow removal.

Alderman Bob Fioretti thinks it's OK for 72 hours.

Businessman Willie Wilson says he doesn't like it.
