Basement wood stove suspected in fatal Muskegon-area fire

HOLTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Western Michigan authorities say a wood stove in the basement of a Muskegon-area house may have started a fire that killed an 80-year-old man.

The Muskegon Chronicle says the fire happened Tuesday afternoon and quickly consumed the home in Muskegon County's Holton Township.

Family members tell WZZM-TV that the victim was Dave Proctor.

Township fire Chief Art Stevens says fire crews didn't immediately determine the cause but "seem to think the fire started from a wood stove in the basement."

Numerous neighboring communities helped the township fire department.
