Tennessee dismisses DL Michael Sawyers from team

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee has dismissed defensive lineman Michael Sawyers from the team for what Volunteers coach Butch Jones described as violations of athletic and team policies.

Jones also said Wednesday that wide receivers Ryan Jenkins and Vic Wharton had "asked to explore other options" and had been granted that opportunity, a move that gives both players the chance to explore a transfer. Pittsburgh announced earlier in the day that it had added former Tennessee reserve quarterback Nathan Peterman as a graduate transfer.

Sawyers played in four games this past season as a freshman and made two tackles. Wharton caught five passes for 64 yards and a touchdown as a freshman in 2014. Jenkins caught one pass for six yards as a redshirt freshman this past season.
