Walker budget would cut $5 million from public broadcasting
MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Republican Gov. Scott Walker's budget plan would slash $5 million from the board that operates public broadcasting over the next two years.
Walker spokeswoman Laurel Patrick says the Educational Communications Board, which runs Wisconsin Public Television and Wisconsin Public Radio, should be able to absorb the cut through fundraising efforts.
She says the ECB covers nearly all its programming costs through grants, gifts and private donations. She says revenue from those sources has exceeded projections in recent budgets and the ECB anticipates those revenues will rise by nearly $2 million over the biennium.
The state will continue to support public Amber Alert broadcasts and the ECB's other emergency functions.
