Obama seeks $69M for Great Lakes Army Corps projects

DETROIT (AP) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would spend $16.1 million on dredging projects to keep Great Lakes shipping channels open under President Barack Obama's proposed 2016 budget.

The budget released Monday includes more than $69 million for Detroit District civil works, including maintenance and operation of the lock system at Sault Ste. Marie that enables vessels to move between Lake Superior and the lower lakes.

Additionally, navigation projects are planned in numerous harbor and river cities around the region including Grand Haven, Muskegon, St. Joseph, Saginaw and Detroit.

Obama's blueprint includes $3.8 million to continue monitoring lake levels and water flow, while $100,000 would go toward a feasibility study on deepening the upper Saginaw River.

The Detroit District's jurisdiction includes Indiana, Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
