Lindenhurst's Turkey Tragedy: A town in mourning

Photo of the growing memorial for the Lindenhurst Turkey.Liliana Lech

As a resident of Lake Villa, my family and I, like most of the community, took a liking to our new"neighbor". A female Turkey had taken up residence on the corner of Sand Lake Rd. And Route 45 in Lindenhurst a few months back. . She could be seen on any given day frequenting the intersection or roaming around by Walgreens on the corner there. My kids and I looked for her every morning on the way to school. We would often see people out of their cars encouraging her out of the road. Most times she would have traffic at a standstill. She had even been photographed roosting on the traffic light. What began as just sightings became a happy expectation, while driving in that direction. Until one day last week. ........

Word had spread through the town that some monster hit our Turkey overnight on Wed last week. Soon after, a growing memorial tribute on Sand Lake and Rte. 45 was started and has kept growing in size for the towns unofficial mascot. A Facebook page (Rip Lindenhurst Turkey) was started for the community to share pictures or stories they may have captured of the towns deceased friend. A small story, of a small town, coming together for a BIG tragedy. RIP our gobble-less gobbler.
